ICYMI—Hagerty Offers Amendment to Strike Provision Requiring States to Offer 24/7 Ballot Drop Boxes

May 11, 2021

WASHINGTON – United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN), a member of the Senate Rules & Administration Committee, today offered an amendment during the committee’s markup of the Democrats’ “For the Politicians Act”, striking the provision requiring states to offer 24/7, potentially unsecured ballot drop boxes.

“This bill requires every jurisdiction to use ballot drop boxes for mail-in ballots and does not prohibit locating them on street corners, back alleys, or anywhere else that lacks adequate security and surveillance. My amendment would strike this provision to prevent the possibility of ballot harvesters, political operatives, or other actors wishing to interfere with our elections from taking advantage of the lack of security required at these drop boxes, including by dropping off thousands of ballots undetected or tampering with the boxes or the ballots being dropped off. This system of unmanned, un-surveilled drop boxes would create great potential for fraud and corruption and would undermine confidence in elections,” Senator Hagerty said.
