Hagerty Statement on the Passing of Former Secretary of State George Shultz

February 7, 2021

NASHVILLE, TN— United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) today released the following statement on the passing of former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz:

“George Shultz is one of the most exceptional individuals and public servants our country has known. A Marine Corps Veteran, he was an economist and businessman by trade, and someone who held four federal cabinet level posts. His accomplishments as President Ronald Reagan’s Secretary of State remain remarkable to this day. His diplomacy and principled approach to dealing with the Soviet Union helped pave the way for ending the Cold War. I was fortunate to benefit from Secretary Shultz’s advice and counsel when I served as U.S. Ambassador to Japan. Chrissy and I extend our prayers to the Shultz family, and all those grieving the passing of this great American diplomat.”
