Hagerty Votes to Preserve U.S. Senate, Opposes Democrats’ Effort to Federalize Elections

WASHINGTON—United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) today yet again opposed a partisan power grab by Senate Democrats to federalize elections, which would open the floodgates to illegally cast votes and jeopardize our system of representative government. After this election-takeover effort failed again, Senate Democrats attempted yet another power-grab by seeking to change Senate rules to eliminate the legislative filibuster in order to jam through their politician-protection measure, which Hagerty also opposed.

“Sadly, President Biden and Senate Democrats continue to ignore the real problems facing the American people and focus instead on the problems facing politicians,” said Senator Hagerty. “Today nearly all Senate Democrats attempted to destroy the U.S. Senate and silence half of its members in order to execute a partisan election power grab. Democrats’ reckless, hyperbolic claims that American democracy is on the verge of collapse unless we enact their hyper-partisan agenda are self-serving, patently absurd, and dangerous. Moreover their cynical attempt to expropriate in service of that agenda the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, which should be beyond political partisanship, is beyond the pale. Democrats are not after voting rights; they are after power. Election outcomes should be determined by the voters, not the politicians, and thankfully a few of my Democrat colleagues put country over party and stood with Republicans today to preserve the U.S. Senate.”
