Hagerty Announces Subcommittee Leadership Positions on Foreign Relations, Appropriations, and Banking Committees

WASHINGTON—United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) today announced his appointments as Ranking Member of the following subcommittees on the Senate Foreign Relations, Appropriations, and Banking Committees for the 118th Congress:

On the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Hagerty will serve as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on State Department and USAID Management, International Operations, and Bilateral International Development. On the Senate Appropriations Committee, Hagerty will serve as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government. On the Senate Banking Committee, Hagerty will serve as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on National Security and International Trade and Finance.

“Having served as U.S. Ambassador to Japan and having spent my career in business, I am well-equipped to assume the ranking membership of the subcommittees that oversee the management of the State Department and operations of agencies that regulate our economy and financial institutions and provide basic government services,” said Senator Hagerty. “I am honored to receive these appointments that will position me on the front lines of ensuring our diplomatic and development efforts always advance U.S. national security interests and values, establishing transparency and rooting out waste, fraud, and abuse of taxpayer dollars in Washington, holding the federal bureaucracy accountable while making certain that the views and values of all Tennesseans shape some of our most crucial policies, assuring that the American worker benefits from fair and reciprocal trade, and leveraging authorities for sanctions and export control when appropriate to hold our adversaries accountable.” 

About Hagerty’s Ranking Memberships:

  • The Foreign Relations Subcommittee on State Department & USAID Management, International Operations, and Bilateral International Development’s responsibilities include “all matters involving State Department, USAID, Millennium Challenge Corporation, and Peace Corps management and international operations, bilateral international development policy, and bilateral foreign assistance.” This jurisdiction includes “the general oversight responsibility for management and operations of the Department of State, USAID, U.S. Agency for Global Media, and the Foreign Service, as well as public diplomacy matters,” and also “responsibility for reviewing the budget and operations of the State Department and USAID.”

    • In addition to serving as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on State Department and USAID Management, Hagerty will also serve as a member of two other Foreign Relations Subcommittees: East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy; and Multilateral International Development, Multilateral Institutions, and International Economic, Energy, and Environmental Policy.

  • The Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government has jurisdiction over a wide array of federal agencies, including the operations of the Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Executive Office of the President, Office of Management and Budget, General Services Administration, Judiciary, Small Business Administration, and the District of Columbia. Additionally, the Subcommittee has oversight over several Federal Financial Institutions, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, Federal Trade Commission, and Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

    • In addition to serving as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, Hagerty will also serve as a member of four other Appropriations Subcommittees: Energy and Water Development; State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs; Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies; and Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies.

  • The Banking Subcommittee on National Security and International Trade and Finance has jurisdiction over export and foreign trade promotion, export controls and financing, international economic policy, international financial and development institutions, as well as the International Trade Administration, the Bureau of Export Administration, and the Defense Production Act. 

    • In addition to serving as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on National Security and International Trade and Finance, Hagerty will also serve as a member of two other Banking Subcommittees: Housing, Transportation, and Community Development; and Securities, Insurance, and Investment.
