Hagerty Joins Effort to Stop Sanctuary Cities

February 2, 2021

WASHINGTON – United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) has joined legislation, introduced by Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA), that would prevent “sanctuary” jurisdictions that ignore federal immigration laws and refuse to cooperate with law enforcement from taking advantage of federal grant programs.

“Local jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with federal law enforcement jeopardize the safety of American communities and put our officers at greater risk of danger,” said Senator Hagerty. “The Biden Administration has made it clear that they do not intend to adhere to our immigration laws, so the Senate must work to support law enforcement and enhance our national security. This legislation will protect our neighborhoods, our law enforcement, and our families.”

The Stop Dangerous Sanctuary Cities Act would:

  • Provide that state and local officers complying with a federal immigration detainer order cannot be sued for complying with federal law; and
  • Provide that sanctuary jurisdictions—those with laws or policies restricting information sharing with federal enforcement officials or compliance with lawful federal detainers—are ineligible for certain grant funding.

Hagerty opposed the confirmation of Alejandro Mayorkas today to be Secretary of Homeland Security, which he announced last week, due to Mayorkas’ past ethical lapses and his lax immigration enforcement agenda that will jeopardize American security.
